The foundation of great commentary is great research - whilst a big part of the role is describing the action on the pitch in as much detail as possible (especially as it’s a radio audience we’re catering to), we’re also in essence telling a story.

Player stats, previous head-to-head results, details about debutants - the statistical information really helps enhance the commentary and we’re lucky to have our own resident statistician in Paul Hinson (@StattoPaul59)

From the reams of information he provides us with, I review and pull out the parts I feel could be most interesting and add it into my own preparation notes I’ve been making in the run up to the fixture.

Just as important and valuable as the statistics in terms of building a narrative, are the statements made by the manager and by players over the course of the season. As part of my preparation, I watch footage from post-match interviews, game previews and also statements made during player signings, pulling out quotes that may be the basis of observations made later or questions posed to the manager in our post-match interview on air.
